Building Three Revenue Scenarios for Your UAE SME
Scenario / Situation
Scenario planning is not about predicting the future perfectly. It is about deciding in advance what the business will do if revenue lands above, near, or below plan. For a UAE SME, that usually means having a clear base case, downside case, and severe-stress case.
Without scenarios, management reacts emotionally to every monthly variance. With scenarios, the business knows what cash, cost, and decision responses are triggered at each level of performance.
Why it happens
Revenue rarely misses plan in a straight line. A project delays, a major customer reduces orders, collections slow, or one channel underperforms. The problem is not only the revenue shortfall itself. It is the lag between when trading weakens and when management acts.
A scenario framework shortens that lag. It turns uncertainty into thresholds: if revenue is at level A, continue. If revenue is at level B, freeze discretionary spend. If revenue is at level C, take structural action.
What to check
Build three monthly scenarios from the current run rate. A practical version is: expected case, moderate downside, and hard downside. For each one, estimate revenue, gross margin, fixed costs, collections timing, and resulting monthly cash movement.
Then ask three decision questions. At which scenario does the business stop generating cash? At which scenario does runway fall below three months? At which scenario do fixed costs need to be reduced rather than merely monitored?
What to do
Link each scenario to a defined management response. In the expected case, continue normal execution. In the moderate downside case, tighten collections and slow discretionary spending. In the hard downside case, protect cash immediately and cut commitments that cannot be justified by near-term collections.
Review the scenarios monthly, not yearly. In fast-moving UAE SME environments, waiting for quarter-end often means the signal arrives too late.

A scenario is useful only if it changes a decision. If this is your situation → use the Cash Runway Calculator.
